Brrrrrrr…… Let’s talk insulation!

I hope you all survived the “Freezing’ temps this past week. On this week’s show Joe interviewed the Tom, the “Attic Fanatic”, representing Koala Insulation. Joe and Tom discussed solutions for saving money and keeping your house comfortable in the cold weather. Everything from blown-in attic insulation to the “Draft Master” attic stairway insulator.

Why is insulation important, especially in cold weather? The most important thing about proper insulation is it’s ability to keep the heat in your home during cold weather. The walls of a typical house will lose around 30 to 40 per cent of the heat. The roof comes in second place, accounting for approximately 25% of heat loss. Then comes windows and doors with 20% and finally, the floor.

PRO TIP

Be sure you have the proper amount of insulation in your attic. Measure your insulation with a yardstick or measuring tape from the top of the insulation down to the sheetrock floor of your attic. If it measures less than 14” then you need to add the difference. A depth of 8” would require a 6” add a 10” depth would require a 4” add and so on. Fourteen inches of attic insulation will give you an R-38. That’s where you want to be here in the greater Houston area.
